High School Suicide Prevention Presentation Polk county health department will conduct a Suicide Prevention presentation in select classrooms on April 19 and May 2. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for teens, after accidents and homicide. About 1 in 15 high school students attempt suicide each year, and roughly 1 in 50 make an attempt serious enough to require medical attention. Peers and teachers are often the first ones to notice the warning signs – if they know what to look for. This presentation will help your students understand when and how to get help for themselves or classmates. If you would prefer your student not to participate in this presentation, please contact Melissa Huechteman at mhuechteman@phr6.org. Students are also able to self opt out. Information used in the presentation can be found at https://classroom.kidshealth.org/classroom/9to12/problems/emotions/suicide.pdf 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

Just as a reminder, PHHS finals will take place on May 16th and May 17th. Finals for our Senior class will take place on Wednesday, May 10th. Students are exempt from taking their final if they are carrying an average of 80% or higher in the class for their semester average AND have been in attendance at least 98% of the semester. This allows for some students to possibly be exempt from some finals and not for others. Students are required to be present for the finals at the scheduled times. Students must have been enrolled since January 3rd, 2023 in order to qualify for exemption. Attendance and grades will be pulled on Tuesday, May 2nd at 3:31PM. Student exemption forms will be sent home by the end of that same week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Respectfully, Dr. Baker
